Best Laptops For Mechanical Engineering Students (IN 2020)

As a Certified Mechanical Design Engineer, I am the right person to tell you which are the Best Laptops For Mechanical Engineering Students to buy in 2020.

I an engineer have gone through engineering and have been using nearly most of the mechanical designing software’s like ANSYS, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CREO Parametric, MATLAB, LabView, MS Office. And therefore, I am qualified enough to tell you which laptop you should buy. In this article, I want to go through the top 10 laptops for mechanical engineering students.

However, before I get into it a little disclaimer. I actually went through all my Engineering with my MacBook. And the reason I did that was that I wanted a MacBook, and most of the other students in my class also had a MacBook.

No one really had any of these super-powerful pcs that I’m about to tell you and the reason being is because at our university we actually had a computer lab where we would do all of our assignments. So none of us actually had any catting software such as SolidWorks or ANSYS or MATLAB. None of us had any of those programs on our computers. All of those programs that we used were on the workstations at the University.

If you are in a hurry you can quickly follow up to our bulleted list of best engineering laptops.

WHY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS NEED THESE LAPTOPS?

So, if you want to work with SolidWorks at home or for some reason on the bus then you will need a much more powerful computer.

One example in my undergrad, I actually had a huge, it was so huge Excel spreadsheet and my MacBook was actually not able to open it. This is where one of these more powerful computers would have come in handy.

But on the other hand, these computers are much cheaper than the MacBook that I had. So why I got an AK book because I’m an idiot :P. And I was just following the trend please don’t judge me just read the article.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A BEST ENGINEERING LAPTOP

So, before getting to the video I wanted to mention the most important things you need to consider when you’re buying an engineering laptop.

1- Storage Space

So, the first one is the storage space. You need at least 500 GB of storage space. My computer has almost a terabyte, and I can tell you it’s completely full. The reason why you need more than 500 GB of storage space is that if you are going to be creating any of those catty they take up a lot of room.

So trust me you’re gonna need more than 500 GB of space. Your hard drive should also be solid-state because it has no moving parts and for this reason, it’s a lot faster.

2- Powerful RAM

The second thing you’re gonna need to consider is RAM. More RAM is needed if you have to do computations with a lot of data such as these catting programs. Or if you’re gonna be running a lot of stuff and at the same time so if you want to be surfing the web and rendering video and working it in Excel and working in MATLAB, all at the same time. Then you need more RAM.

So, I would suggest at least 8 GB of RAM but more like 16 gigs.

3- Fast CPU

The third thing you need is a fast CPU, at least Core i5. You’re gonna need this if you want to run any of those programs, again MATLAB, SolidWorks, ANSYS etc.

4- Dedicated Graphics

The fourth thing you’re going to need to consider is having a dedicated graphics card. If you want to do any 3d-rendering that is done in ANSYS or SolidWorks or whatever then you’re gonna need a dedicated graphics card.

And 2 GB of DDR3 is enough for practically all of those applications.

5- Windows Operating System

The fifth and yet the most important thing is the Windows operating system. Now, most of these programs are only compatible with a Windows operating system, unfortunately. So even when I did need some of them I would have to partition my hard drive disk because I had a Mac and it was a different operating system. And I would still have to install Windows software on half of my disk. As it is the only way to run Windows programs on Mac OS.

So, I would really suggest that you get a Windows operating system.

6- Lightweight

6th thing you need to consider is, it should be lightweight. Now I know what you’re thinking like oh this is the thing I care about the least. But trust me if you’re carrying this backpack every single day to every class. You’re going to the library, you’re going to classes, going out for lunch and you’re gonna take your laptop with you.

You don’t want to be carrying around a super heavy laptop. You’re gonna get a terrible posture your back is gonna start hurting. And you’re gonna end up not wanting to leave the library because you don’t want to lug around your giant laptop.

So that being said here are my top 10 picks for best laptops for mechanical engineering students to buy in 2020.

Best Laptops For Mechanical Engineering Students

BEST LAPTOPS FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS

1- Acer Aspire VX15 (Best Laptop for Solidworks)

So the first one is the Acer Aspire VX15. It is really the best one for its price. It has an Nvidia graphics card with 4 GB of dedicated RAM. And it has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM for the computer, in general. It has an HD widescreen display however it does have 256 GB of a solid-state drive. But there are upgrading kits to add more hard drive space.

So, without any doubt, it is one of the Best Laptops For Mechanical Engineering Students.

2- Acer Predator Helios 300

Next is the Acer Predator Helios 300. And this one is also a very good laptop for its price. Again it has 256 GB of solid-state drive which you can upgrade. Just like the Aspire, it has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM space.

3- HP Envy 17 (Best 17-Inch Laptop Under 1500)

Next, we have the HP Envy 17. Now, this computer is really good if you want to watch a lot of movies or a lot of Netflix or gaming or whatever, along with design. Because it has a full 2k Ultra HD touchscreen display. You can also get its solid-state drive from a range of 120 GB to one terabyte. And again Nvidia graphics card with 4 GB of dedicated RAM. Its is also one of the best 17-inch laptops under 1500.

4- Microsoft Surface Book

Number four is the Microsoft Surface Book. Now, this laptop is really cool because you can detach the screen and use it just like a tablet. And it also has a pen that you can use with the screen so you can take notes in class and you don’t have to bring a notebook. It has 512 GB of storage space and 16 GB of RAM. And it is only 3.6 pounds which for me is a huge plus because that means it’s very very lightweight.

5- Lenovo ThinkPad P51

Five is the Lenovo ThinkPad. Now, this computer is also best for every single professor at every university. I’ve ever been to has this laptop, it is a mission. It is super big it’s super clunky. It’s really not beautiful at all. But it can do everything.

And as an Intel quad-core i7 CPU, HD display, one terabyte of a solid-state drive with 32 GB of RAM. So ThinkPads have a reputation for being tough and serviceable so it’s good if you plan on having the same laptop for a long period of time. Since you can also upgrade it with newer parts. What some people do is they actually get a super old one of eBay for like $200 and then upgrade it or pimp it out to their liking now.

Why Mechanical Engineering Students Should Not Buy Lenovo Y700?

I just wanted to mention briefly why the Lenovo y700 did not make it onto my list. Now the reason why this newer Lenovo laptop didn’t make it onto my list is that Lenovo has been caught twice putting malware onto its newer computers. I don’t need dedicated ads by Lenovo on my computer. So if you want to buy a Lenovo laptop just get a ThinkPad. It’s the best mechanical engineering laptop.

6- ASUS R518UQ-RH74T (Best Laptop for Drawing and Animation)

Then we’ve got the Asus computers. I’m not gonna write their full name because it’s too long. Basically, the Asus has 2.7 GHz of core i7 and a 128-gigabyte solid-state drive with one terabyte of a hard drive. It has a 2k HD touchscreen display that can bend around 180 degrees, so it makes it really easy for mechanical designing, mark up drawing and writing.

7- Razer Blade Stealth 13.3

So the Razer Blade stealth 13.3. It has 512 GB of a solid-state drive and 16 gigs of RAM. It’s only 2.98 pounds, which again for me is always a bonus. I don’t like carrying around heavy laptops. And it has a touchscreen with an ultra-high-definition display.

8- Dell Precision 7720 & 7520

Next, we have the Dell Precision. Now, this is also a super-powerful computer. You can actually customize it to your liking. So, that means it comes in three different CPU options the Core i5, i7 and Xeon. The drive you can get up to 4 TB. The ram you can get up to 64 GB and you can get up to 4 GB Nvidia graphics cards installed.

So this computer is definitely like one of the most powerful out there, and I was suggesting. If you’re gonna guess like a gamer, I don’t need a computer like this. And I’m an engineer so just consider that.

9- Dell Inspiron i7577

Next is the Dell Inspiron. It is less powerful than the Precision but still a very good computer. CPU is 3.5 GHz of Core-i7. It has 1TB of hard drive space plus 128 GB of a solid-state drive and 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. It also has an Nvidia graphics card with 6 GB of dedicated RAM.

10- Dell XPS 15

And finally number 10 on our list, yes we made it to 10 laptops. So the last computer is the Dell XPS 15. This CPU is a Quad-core i7. It has 1 TB of a solid-state drive and 32 GB of RAM. It has an ultra high definition 5k display and an Nvidia graphics card with 4 GB of dedicated RAM.

Also Remember: These are the best engineering laptops even if you are in any field of engineering or even you are a college student. Whether you are in electrical, mechanical, computer, nursing, civil, mechatronics, graphics design, art, deep learning, programming, ethical hacking (Like Pentesting, Kali Linux) engineering field. Because all these fields need to run the same powerful software.
